It's Laurens Birthday!

It's my good friend Lauren's birthday today!
Happy Birthday!

We had a very festive celebration in her honour yesterday. We went to a famous place in the township called Mzoli's. I am sure that you are probably not familiar with it, but it is quite the tourist destination. have wanted to go for ages. It's in Gugulethu and is probably one of the most famous social places in the area. You basically buy meat from the butchery next door and then they barbeque it for you. You go to one of the many liquor establishments in the area and buy your drinks by the case (the cheapest drinks ever!) and then you sit around and socialise.

We had such a good time. The great thing about Mzoli's is that the people are so friendly and Mzoli [the owner] actually comes around and socialises with everyone. A lot of local people go to it, in fact more locals than tourists, so it really is an "authentic" experiences in some ways. Now I am not from the hood - like I have never ever lived in a township and can count the number of times I've been to one. Gugulethu is a black township. It was really funny to watch our motorcade pull up and a bunch of white kids step into the township for the first time. They were so shell-shocked in some ways, but really so open to the experience. There were a couple of black kids among us and we stood out - very "model C" - sunglasses and golf-shirts always give it away! It was so much fun, we had such a good time and the food was great.

We got back to our side of town and a group of us decided to have an after party. We consumed many many beverages over a 6 hour period. It ended with me "singing" We Belong Together. I convinced the entire Rondebosch community that I should never get a recording deal. It is truly so bad. I will not reveal the full extent of what went down, but to cut a long story short I don't think I can show my face in the Rondebosch CBD for a while. It was out of control - so many regrets. Life goes on... A memorable experience.
